Book covers - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Mihailovich Dostoyevsky Books (Gambler, Crime and Punishment and The Notes from the Underground)
The notes from the Underground book cover is in grey and black because these are the colors that represents the darkness of the underground. Transition from light to dark creates the stairs that leads to the darkness.
The Gambler book cover is representing the writer himself (it's known that he was a gambler). His character is portrayed as a king on a playing card.  At one half of the playing card he has a crown and luxurious clothes, while on the other half he doesn't have anything.
Axe on the cover of the book Crime And Punishment, is a weapon that the character from the book used for murder. At the same time the axe represents judicial hammer. It means that his weapon (a crime), is in fact his punishment.
